CHAPTER 24

Roark

Staring through the dense tree line, I’m surprised to find Pella dancing in the palms of a Scullard.

The way she is moving…

I’ve never seen Pella move like this before. Alluring. Seductive. Enchanting. A knot wells in my throat as I wonder why she would do such a thing. Maybe they’ve done something to her? Or perhaps she thinks this is now her lot.

I haven’t the faintest idea why Pella would give in to the drooling gaze of these wretched beasts. Even more, something new stirs inside me. Envy, perhaps. I don’t know. All I know is I don’t like the way they’re looking at her. There’s a mixture of hunger and lust in their eyes, and it sickens me.

Whatever it is, it ends now.

“Excresco!” the hairy, rotund beast shrieks, salivating at the sight of Pella grinding against his furry palm.

“As you wish,” she says with a cunning smirk as her wings flutter hard against her back.

Just then, a bright green light shoots through the darkened forest, and Pella grows almost to the size of a petite mortal.

“Hold her down!” a lankier one orders as he goes to grab Pella’s arm, but his hands go straight through her as though she were a phantom.

“Fucking pixie magic!” the shorter beast yells as he goes to grab her once more.

Fucking pixie magic, indeed. He’s right. I’ve never seen Pella this size before.

Blowing a heap of gold pixie dust, Pella blinds both Scullards and they crumple to their waists, screaming at the pain.

Damn, I think to myself. Pella doesn’t need saving. An appreciative smirk spreads across my face as I watch her send another round of dusting to hold them in place. I don’t have long to ogle at her stout-hearted feat when a larger Scullard plows between the others, reaching out for Pella.

“You fools!” he roars, his hands sifting through Pella’s new shadowy form.

I won’t let him touch her.

Growling, I strike the blade of my scythe through the tree line, tearing the branches from their limbs. A thick trunk falls first, hitting the taller one in the head, knocking him out cold.

“Happy to see me?” I wink, throwing Pella a jaunty grin.

Her eyes dance, smiling as she stares at me. “Well, I whispered to the darkness, and it sent me you.” For a moment, time freezes, and all I see is her. A strange feeling wells within me that I cannot shake, but even if I could, I wouldn’t.

“You’re mine!” one of the Scullards shouts, this time capturing Pella’s smaller form I hadn’t noticed was just behind her phantom.

“No!” Pella squeals, working hard to get out of his clutch.

“Let her go!” I demand, banging my scythe hard against the ground. As I do, my body instantly transforms into the gangly, grotesque features most in the Netherworld have come to fear.

The shorter beast runs off, making his way toward the camp filled with the Scullard herd. Little does he know, he won’t get far. My dark guard has this place surrounded.

“You don’t frighten me, Reaper,” the Scullard sneers, keeping a tight grip on Pella.
